One of the prolific singers of this country Manna Dey known for his ghazal mix in Hindi cinema songs has breathed his last in Bangalore on Thursday morning at a private hospital. He is a resident of Bangalore for a long time. Manna Dey health due to old age deteriorated off late.

The 94 years legendary singer of many memorable songs was undergoing treatment at Hrudayala in Bangalore. He died at 3.50 am on Thursday. It was lung infection.

Born on 1st May 1919 Prabodh Chandra Dey known as Manna Dey made debut as singer in 1942, is recipient of Padmasri, Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke award winner. A prolific singer in Hindi and Belgali and other Indian languages – the peak period of Manna Dey was from 1953 to 1976. He has rendered over 3500 songs in his life.

Dada Saheb Phalke award winner known for songs like Puchcho Na Kaise Maine….Ay Mere Pyaare Watan..Aye mere Bichade Chaman, Laga Chinari Main Daag….stayed in younger daughter Shumita Deb in Kalyan Nagar in Bangalore East.

Manna Dey resident of Bangalore capital of Karnataka was also a singer in Kannada films. Kuhu Kuhu….song of Kuvempu composed by GK Venkatesh of ‘Kalavathi’ Kannada film, Jayathe Janathe Sathya Meva Jayathe…of ‘Kalpavruksha’ Kannada cinema,  ‘Jagavidu Sojiga….In Kranti Veera Sangolli Rayanna of 1967 in the music direction of Bhonsle – that also had the songs from Latha Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar), Hidi Manne Ee Kaaya…in Margadarshi Kannada film in M Ranga Rao music direction are some of the songs of Manna Dey in Kannada.
It was during his intermediate classes at Scottish Church College, Manna Dey’s singing talent became apparent. During the recess beating the tables of the classroom and singing aloud to entertain his compatriots, became a common feature for the budding talent. Later he started taking singing lessons from his uncle Krishna Chandra Dey and from Ustad Dabir Khan. And it was at this period of time Manna Dey stood first for three consecutive years in three different categories of inter-collegiate singing competitions. A star in the realm of Indian music was born.
In 1942, Manna Dey accompanied his renowned uncle Krishna Chandra Dey on a visit to Mumbai. And there first under the tutelage of his uncle, then Sachin Dev Burman, Manna Dey started working as a successful assistant music director. Later he also assisted other famous music composers for some time and then decided to work independently. But even while working separately as a music director for different successful Hindi films Manna Dey never stopped taking musical lessons in Hindustani Classical music from two classical stalwarts, Ustad Aman Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan.
